Reluctantly Resourceful

I cannot believe that I am doing a Frugal post.
I really cannot stand the word Frugal.
It is not something I do well.

BUT
recently, I have had to become more Frugal.
No.
Resourceful!

anywho.

Here is my top 10 lists of things we did to instantly wipe hundreds and hundreds of dollars out of our monthly budget. {I am sure everyone else already does these things... but if you are reluctantly resourceful, like moi, try some of this stuff. I'm telling you - it is nice to be a 'waster.'}

Reluctantly Resourceful Top 10 {The Saving Money List}:
1. Talk to your good friend Flamingo Mama. This girl knows all the short cuts. {And aren't you jealous that I can just go have coffee with her? In fact, I got to witness the flamingo stance, yet again. In person.}
2. Meal Planning based on what you actually HAVE in your pantry already. Pick 5 dinners for the week and eat off of the leftovers in between. Make as much as you can from SCRATCH!
3. Grocery basics: Do NOT buy anything unless it is on the list or it is a SUPER ESSENTIAL item you forgot to write down.
4. Food shopping basics: Do your major shopping at a cheapo store {Aldi or Walmart}, get your produce from a farm stand or market, and check your town for FACTORY OUTLETS. Our town has a bread outlet. {thanks for the tip, Flamingo}
5. Don't "stock up." Unless it is a regular ingredient or pantry item {NOT snack items}. It wastes money and you eat more.
6. Call up your cable company. or phone. or service provider. or whoever. find out who is cheapest and call back your current provider and have them match it. Or, sign up for the current promotion.
7. we cut out the TV. I know this is not for everybody. But, we never watch it. except for Chuck, and we can watch that online.
8. Stop buying everything. {this won't last, I know. But can you believe we have bought NOTHING extra for 3 full weeks? NOTHING. It has taught me that I really don't "need" all the stuff I thought I did}
9. call your insurance co. and update your car status. We were paying comprehensive on a car that was no longer worth it. Saved us, like $50/month, Maybe you are too.
10. adjust your thermostat and turn off your lights. More than you already do. You will be surprised at how comfortable you still are.

Reluctantly Resourceful or not.
How cool would it be to have several hundred extra bucks a month?
To give. To save. To finally get that one ____. To bless another.

A Family of Farmers: Halloween 2009

This Halloween the whole family got in on the action, as a family of Farmers!

We don't live in a neighborhood, so this year we gathered up the farmkids and headed over to our friends' house for pizza and neighborhood trick-or-treating.

Here we are!:
Getting into character, I guess?:
Here I am with my friend Heather and with Agniya:
This was Agniya's first Halloween, so... even though she looks like a 25 year old supermodel, we encouraged her to get in on the action. SO much fun!

Nevermind that farmer in the background watching football :)
Agniya was so cute when she said "Trick or Treat" with a Russian accent!
Another fun and fright-free Halloween!

Whooooooo's Twoooo? An Owl Themed Birthday Party

Guess Hooooooo's Turning Two?? This year Christian's Second Birthday Party had an Owl Theme. It was so much fun, and very easy. Don't ask me why, but my 2 year old loves owls. Whoooo knew?

Here are the super easy, super cute owl cupcakes {pretty self-explanatory decorations}:
And the ultra easy goody bags {Christian's bag may or may not be wrinkled due to me beating it into submission so that it would stand up}:
The BIRTHDAY BOY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh my cuteness gracious: The main event at the party was the perfect fall whether, yet another Little Big Gift from God. All of the little ones and big ones headed outside to enjoy this fleeting, beautiful time of year: A great shot of Aunt Tammy and Christian looking at the early harvest moon: Mommy, ahem -with some yummy wine, and our exchange daughter Agniya, enjoying the sounds of happy children:

What is a fall day without football????:
Um. How cute is this????? Go, Peyton. It's your birthday.:
After lots of fall fun, it is time to fill the children with sugar. Out come the Owls and the Happy Birthday Song, of course:
Happy Owl Eater:
Some after dinner music, thanks to our lovely guests:
And the opening of a few presents:
Here, I must give a shout-out to Caleb for being REALLY good to his brother at his B-day party, and by being very cool about the "lotsa gifts for him but not me" thing. You are awesome, buddy!:And yes, we managed to gather the gang up on the sofa and get most of the sweeties to smile and look at the camera {you don't want to know what all the dads had to do to make this happen}:
A great picture of Caleb and Christian with their "sister":
Sigh. Mommy and her precious birthday baby. I can hardly believe that my little guy is TWO!
So, Whooo's Two? My baby. Who was just born yesterday, wasn't he??

Our Blackberry Farm and The BEST fruit crisp recipe.

Better late than never.
And we are so happy that our bumper crop of wild blackberries came late this year!!

This just says Summer to me:

And I love that we are building Summer memories with our boys, feasting in the bounty of God's goodness:

Seriously. Could it get more beautiful and mouth-watering than this?:

{We tend to get just a little excited over Blackberry Picking}:

Simple. Perfect. Summer.:

And now for my most favorite and Prized Fruit Crisp Recipe (an adaptation from a Martha Stewart recipe).
WARNING: This recipe is ENTIRELY too easy and too delicious! You basically will find all of your ingredients in your pantry. Just add the fresh fruit. Now, how perfect is that??

Preheat your oven to 400 degrees F.

Filling:

Approx. 2 overflowing cups of fruit
Between 1/4c. and 1 c. of sugar (example: for these tart blackberries or for rhubarb, I use 3/4-1 full cup. for strawberries or blackberries, I use a scant 1/4 c. You get the idea)
1/4 c. flour

Combine Filling ingredients and place in an ovenproof casserole dish (I like to put mine in a dish that will put the fruit at about 2 inches of depth):

Topping:
1/2 cup flour
1 stick of salted butter
1/2 cup packed light-brown sugar
1 cup rolled (slow) oats
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

In the bowl of a food processor, combine flour and butter and pulse until the butter pieces are pea sized. Add brown sugar, oats and cinnamon - pulse to combine. Sprinkle crumb topping over the fruit filling:

Bake until fruit is bubbling and tender, and topping is golden, 35-45 min. (Rhubarb needs longest, but is OH SO good with this recipe).
***********
I am telling you, peeps, serve this baby hot with vanilla ice cream and you will be one happy camper. And. there is a reason why I do not have a picture for you AFTER the crisp came out of the oven....
mmmmmm. Enjoy!

Annual Hot Air Balloon Festival

Each Father's Day weekend, our family has the tradition of heading to the Annual Hot Air Balloon Festival. Here are some pictures from this year's evening of family joy:

The balloons setting up, and Caleb watching each and every step:

Watching the glorious balloons fill up, and having a family picnic:

It's starting to go "up, up, up!":
